About Us

Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY&IMF) was originally and officially established as a coaling and repair station on May 13, 1908.  Over 107 years later, the shipyard remains a vital factor in our nation’s global security and in Hawaii’s economic and social health.

We provide regional maintenance for the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet.  Strategically, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is the largest ship repair facility between the U.S. West Coast and Far East, located roughly two weeks’ steaming time from key areas of the Pacific region. As Hawaii’s mid-Pacific regional maintenance center, our capabilities include wide-ranging excellence in the repair, maintenance, overhaul and alteration of U.S. Navy vessels.

The Shipyard’s workforce of approximately 5,000 civilians and 500 U.S. Navy personnel make us the largest industrial employer in Hawaii, as well as the largest fully integrated military-civilian workforce involved in full-service shipyard work in the United States.

We infuse more than $1.03 billion dollars into Hawaii’s economy each year.  The Shipyard, situated approximately eight miles west of downtown Honolulu, occupies 148 acres, with 139 buildings, 43 other structures, including piers, wharves, three single dry docks, one double dry dock, and four utility systems. The plant value of the facility totals $2.99 billion.

As the islands’ largest industrial employer, we provide well-paying careers for the youth of Hawaii with our Apprentice and Engineer hiring programs, and other student programs. Grooming the “next generation” of Shipyard employees — to keep the U.S. Pacific Fleet “Fit to Fight” — remains critical to Shipyard success.
